| Workshops with Rosemary are an adventure into new territory
- thus a 'sewjourn'. They are appropriate for sewing skill levels from
advanced beginner through advanced quilters, though she's had many rookie
students experience wonderful success with her methods. If you'd like
to customize a workshop for your group's retreat experience, you'll find
an enthusiastic co-producer in Rosemary! Just ask. She's working with
new techniques and projects that she'd love to share with you. |
| FABRIC COLLAGE AND EXQUISITE
EMBELLISHMENT |
.......1 to 5 Day Workshop
|
Liberate your muse and develop your quilting design potential
using the fabric collage techniques in Rosemary's classic book The
Art of Fabric Collage to make a small quilt or artwear such as a vest
or tunic. If, like Rosemary, you've collected enough beautiful laces,
ribbons, elegant silks and satins, sequins, pearls and beads to create
a world-class wedding, you may choose to use those items for a sumptuous
art quilt. You'll learn free motion stitching methods to quilt with
traditional or novelty threads. Embellishment techniques using twin
needles, couching, beading, foiling, and the use of non-traditional
sewing materials such as Xpandaprint, Tyvekâ and Angelina fibers will
be introduced.
This class combines the collage techniques Rosemary's been teaching
for many years with new techniques for using non-traditional quilting
materials and surface design techniques for art quilts. Emphasis will
be on creating wall art rather than clothing, so students creating
garments will be responsible for fitting patterns before class and
can refer to "The Art of Fabric Collage" (Eichorn) for instruction.

| FABRIC COLLAGE: ART
QUILT OR REVERSIBLE VEST WITH AN ATTITUDE |
| |
..........2 or 3 day workshop
|
This CREATIVE SEWJOURN is for anyone with basic through advanced
sewing skills who would like to tap into the deep well of sewing-play
and creativity. Learn innovative fabric collage and free-motion stitching
techniques designed to liberate you from some of the rules you inherited
when you started sewing. You'll get help custom fitting an almost-seamless
vest pattern that becomes your blank canvas for fabric collage. Color,
design, and sewing hints enhance your vest and provide inspiration for
future projects. Instructions are clear and complete and reinforced
by handouts.

| COLLAGE CRASH COURSE |
| |
.........1 or 2 day workshop
|
This class is a mini-version of the collaged vest class. Instead of
a vest, the format is a small wall hanging or a panel which can be used
as part of a larger quilt. Emphasis is on the development of techniques
for fiber collage. You'll learn easy and effective ways to improve your
sense of design and color and Rosemary will help students work on their
individual designs. There's also lots of information on using metallic
and novelty threads for free motion stitching. Rosemary's unique piped
and shaped edge techniques are covered and methods are reinforced with
handouts. |
| FREE MOTION STITCHING
MAGIC |
|
|
|
Your sewing machine is a fascinating art tool. Rosemary starts with
the basics of free-motion stitching and moves quickly to taming techniques
so you can use an array of metallic and novelty threads through the needle
and in the bobbin. Heavy threads and yarns, ribbons, and strings of beads
can be couched using FMS. You'll also learn to use your machine to fashion
medallions that trap flat embellishments. The magic of water-soluble stabilizers
will be demonstrated and you'll learn how to make an ethereal scarf using
yarns, sheer fabrics and water-soluble stabilizer. Expand your inventory
of machine techniques and unleash your creative urges with Rosemary's
enthusiastic support. You'll end up with more confidence in your skills
for quilting your own creations.
|
Sewing on metal, plastic, Angelina fibers, Tyvek®, paper, foil, puffy
paints and air (well, almost) might seem like a far stretch if you've
spent your sewing life solely in the company of quilting cottons. But
if you're ready for an adventure with your sewing machine, come to this
process class and learn fearless sewing and embellishment techniques that
will fan your creative fires. Participants will work with one of their
own photographs for inspiration to create a small sampler using the demonstrated
techniques. Renegade sewing will also inspire you to venture into the
world of art quilts if you haven't yet gone there on your own.

| ADORNMENT: EMBELLISHMENTS FOR
QUILTS AND CLOTHES |

Create marvelous embellishments for your quilts and art quilts and distinctive
closures for your garments. You'll learn Afghani piecing and how to make
many styles of continuous-band prairie points. Tiny covered piping becomes
a Chinese ball button and a contemporary "frog". Machine- and
hand-made tassels are demystified. Learn to use water-soluble stabilizers
for applying shisha mirrors or other flat embellishments by machine. This
fun-packed class can also be used as a preliminary to the vest class for
retreats. Or combine it with Free-Motion Stitching Magic, Renegade Sewing,
or the Collage Crash Course for a terrific two-day workshop. |
| RENEWING THE CREATIVE FIRES |
..........Lecture, Trunk & Fashion Show
|
A brief slide presentation begins with a visual description of the
techniques that Rosemary uses in creating her fabric collages. Then youll
visit her studio and the gardens surrounding it for design and color lessons
using natures illustrations. Youll see how these lessons are
translated into her sumptuous collaged quilts and garments. Her enthusiasm
for her craft shines through as she shares the threads that
have shaped her collages. Rosemarys mastery of color, design and
sewing skills and her zest for life are further illustrated by a trunk
show of her quilts and garments. Included are her garments from the Fairfield/Bernina
Fashion Shows and other award winners which will be modeled by members
of your group. Rosemary peppers her presentation with personal anecdotes
and poems, promising to inspire the artist in anyone who treasures a fabric
stash. |
